Australian Staffy Sets Record with Birth of 22 Puppies

An endearing Staffy from Perth named Honey has notched a new record in Australia’s dog breeding history, successfully delivering 22 puppies.

A New Milestone in Dog Breeding

In an impressive display of canine motherhood, Honey endured three days of challenging labor before giving birth to her huge litter over a 25-hour period on Monday and Tuesday. This feat surpassed the previous Australian record of 21 and fell just two puppies short of the world record.

Her owner, Jayden Cousins, admitted to being taken by surprise. Initially believing Honey had given birth to 11 puppies, he was astounded to find the count rising after a brief break.

He stated, “We hadn’t had a birth for about two hours. We had a short break, had a drink, went upstairs and there was another puppy.”

The stream of births continued till the early hours of the morning, leaving Honey and her humans with a family that had doubled in size overnight.

Mystery Surrounds Fatherhood

Interestingly, the identity of the puppies’ father remains a mystery. Honey’s canine companions, Boston, a staffy, and Buzz, a Rottweiler, are both contenders. Vets have indicated that both dogs could potentially be the fathers of different puppies in the litter, as dogs can conceive multiple litters within a single pregnancy.

Service Dogs in Training

Despite the arduous labor, Honey remains in good health. Sadly, as is often the case with such large litters, not all puppies survived. The surviving puppies, however, are hoped to follow in their mother’s footsteps as service dogs, an aspiration held by their owner, Mr. Cousins.

The standing world record for the largest litter was established by a Neapolitan Mastiff named Tia, who delivered 24 puppies via a C-section in 2004.

This heartwarming story serves as a testament to the incredible strength of canine mothers and the often surprising wonders of animal life.
