Hachiko’s legend lives on, with memorial services held every year on 8 April at Shibuya Station. His life-size model is on display at the National Museum of Nature and Science in Tokyo, and parts of his remains rest alongside his master, Ueno, at the Aoyama Cemetery.
Further statues honoring Hachiko can be found in various locations including Odate, Ueno’s hometown Hisai, the University of Tokyo, and even Rhode Island, USA, where the 2009 film was set.
Looking forward, Professor Yano believes Hachiko’s “heroism” is timeless. Equally optimistic, Mr. Sakuraba, author of an English language children’s book about Hachiko, believes the “unconditional, devoted love” embodied by Hachiko will “live on forever.”
Hachiko’s enduring legacy is a testament to the timeless and universal appeal of loyalty and devotion. Even a century after his birth, the world’s most loyal dog continues to inspire and touch hearts around the globe.
