Rare Sighting: The Enchanting Dumbo Octopus – Deep Sea Delight!

In the mysterious depths of the ocean, a charming and rarely seen creature has emerged, captivating the hearts of ocean enthusiasts worldwide.

The graceful and endearing Dumbo Octopus, with its ethereal appearance, made a stunning appearance during an exploration by the EV Nautilus crew in September 2023.

Join us as we dive into the enchanting world of this ghostly deep-sea dweller.

Behold the Dumbo Octopus

Imagine a ghostly, whitish octopus gracefully gliding through the darkness, its arms extending out like delicate tendrils, and, most notably, its flappy ear-like fins gently propelling it forward. This mesmerizing creature is none other than the Dumbo Octopus, a true marvel of the ocean’s depths.

The Dumbo Octopus earned its endearing nickname from the charming resemblance of its fins to the ears of the beloved elephant hero from the Disney classic, Dumbo. This heartwarming moniker perfectly captures the essence of this remarkable creature.

A Rare Encounter in the Deep

The remarkable footage of the Dumbo Octopus was captured by the Exploration Vessel Nautilus, equipped with a remotely operated vehicle capable of exploring the ocean’s most remote and hidden corners.

This enchanting octopus made its appearance at an unnamed seamount, nestled 5,518 feet (1,682 meters) deep within the Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument near Hawaii.

This marine monument, known as the largest contiguous fully protected conservation area in the US, encompasses a staggering 582,578 square miles (1,508,870 square kilometers) of the Pacific Ocean, stretching northwest of the Hawaiian Islands. To put its vastness into perspective, you could comfortably fit all the national parks in the US within its boundaries.

Ocean Exploration at Its Best

The EV Nautilus, operated by the nonprofit Ocean Exploration Trust, was on the final leg of its Ala ʻAumoana Kai Uli expedition during this remarkable encounter. The month-long expedition aimed to explore previously unseen deep-sea realms within the national monument.

Activities included seafloor mapping operations and remotely operated vehicle dives, gathering invaluable data on the area’s geological history, wildlife, and cultural resources.

This includes the exploration of World War II shipwrecks that add to the historical significance of these ocean depths. Notably, funding for this vital work is provided by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Ocean Exploration program.

The Joy of Discovery

One of the true delights of watching EV Nautilus videos is experiencing the genuine excitement of scientists as they view the footage in real-time. As the Dumbo Octopus graced the screen, multiple voices couldn’t contain their amazement.

Expressions like “Ohh, the flappy ears!” and “It’s so graceful” filled the air. The crew’s enthusiasm was palpable, especially after having previously encountered a deceased Dumbo Octopus being consumed by other ocean creatures.

A Friendly Face in the Deep

The profound depths of the ocean can often appear forbidding, but the presence of the Dumbo Octopus, with its endearing and cartoon-like features, offers a friendly and welcoming face in this mysterious world. It serves as a poignant reminder that beneath the waves, a realm of wonder and enchantment awaits discovery.

As we celebrate this extraordinary encounter with the Dumbo Octopus, we are reminded of the countless wonders that our oceans hold, just waiting for explorers to unveil their mysteries.
